Submissions

Author submissions

Rocking Boat aims to publish books for children from 0 – 12 years that:

  • are by authors whose opportunity to write has been restricted by disability, socio-economic, linguistic, or other circumstances.
  • feature characters not regularly represented in mainstream children’s books. Including – but not limited to - characters with physical or neurological disability, of a language background other than Australian English, and more.

Our authors may be ‘discovered’ through our workshops.

Or they be authors who directly submit to Rocking Boat.

Interested in submitting? Please use our contact form.
Please do not send a full manuscript at this stage.
We will open submissions for full manuscripts in early 2024.

Submissions from illustrators and other creatives

At the moment, Rocking Boat is volunteer run. We are paying royalties to our authors and we hope that we will soon be able to pay these to illustrators. In the future we hope we can think about advances and ‘fee for service’ payments.

We had wonderful, volunteer illustrators for our first books. Huge acknowledgements to Lucy Keirle (Tom’s Space Adventure), Steven Ma (Saving Sam), Carly Boyd (Dora’s BIG Idea) and Sarah Mares (illustrator in collaboration with the author, Holly Brown, on Milo and Angle and the shoe that ‘flewed’). We cannot thank you enough!

If you are interested in illustration, cover design, graphic design or any other aspect of children’s book design, we’re really happy to put on our list of potential (paid) illustrators. Please use our contact form in the first instance. We’ll get back to you with request for examples of your work, areas of interest etc.

And/or, if you are willing and able to contribute to Rocking Boat – i.e. if you can volunteer/donate your work, we’d obviously love to hear from you too! You could have a chance to show your creativity, skills and to add ‘illustrator’ or ‘editor’ or ‘cover designer’ or ‘graphic designer’ to your CV/Resume. If this appeals, please also full in our contact form.
